The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3 was a Soviet interceptor and fighter aircraft used during World War II. First flown in 1940, the MiG-3 was designed primarily for high-altitude combat, distinguishing itself early in the war for its performance at elevations above 12,000 feet. With its high-speed capabilities and powerful armament, it was one of the few fighters capable of engaging the high-flying German reconnaissance aircraft of the time.
While its use at lower altitudes was more challenging due to engine limitations, the MiG-3 still played a significant role in the early stages of the war, particularly in the defense of Moscow. The aircraft's history, including its unique design characteristics and operational challenges, makes it a compelling subject for aviation enthusiasts and model collectors, especially those interested in the Eastern Front of WWII.
