Manufactured by Aichi, the D4Y2 "Suisei" ("Comet") was a high-speed carrier-based dive bomber used by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. Known for its sleek design and exceptional speed, the Aichi D4Y2 was powered by a liquid-cooled engine, offering a significant performance boost over earlier Japanese dive bombers. It played a critical role during pivotal Pacific campaigns and was valued for its agility, range, and dive-bombing precision. The Aichi D4Y2 combined aerodynamic efficiency with versatility, later adapting to reconnaissance and kamikaze missions as the war progressed.
The D4Y series featured several notable variants: the D4Y1 with a liquid-cooled engine; the improved D4Y2 with better armor and fuel protection; the D4Y3, fitted with a radial engine for greater reliability; and the D4Y4 special attack version, optimized for kamikaze missions. Each variant showcased the evolution of Japan’s dive bomber capabilities during the conflict.
