Manufactured by Northrop in partnership with McDonnell Douglas, the Northrop YF-23 was a cutting-edge stealth fighter prototype developed for the U.S. Air Force’s Advanced Tactical Fighter program in the late 1980s. Nicknamed the “Black Widow II,” this aircraft was designed to push the boundaries of speed, stealth, and agility, competing head-to-head with the Lockheed YF-22 (which became the F-22 Raptor). Featuring a diamond-shaped wing, all-moving V-tail, and advanced radar-evading surfaces, the YF-23 promised unmatched high-speed supercruise and low radar cross-section performance.

Two prototypes were built: the YF-23A “PAV-1” in charcoal grey with red hourglass markings, and the YF-23A “PAV-2” in two-tone grey camouflage. Each variant was powered by different engines — the Pratt & Whitney YF119 and the General Electric YF120 — to showcase performance potential. Though the YF-23 never entered production, its futuristic design and advanced stealth technologies remain legendary in aviation history, making it a favorite among collectors of Northrop YF-23 scale models and diecast models.
